Eduardo Sampaio,
Research Fellow

Displaying a wide range of behaviors and intricate cognition (e.g. social learning and episodic-like memory), squid, cuttlefish, and octopus portray a distant evolutive path from vertebrates, and are a perfect example of convergent evolution, cognitive- and behavior-wise. For my PhD, I propose to explore the cognitive potential and behavioural flexibility of these invertebrates, while shedding light on how their unique brain architecture is potentiated during natural and lab-simulated events, and solving cognitive paradigms. As such, I am using multiple approaches, envolving fieldwork (as a National Geographic Explorer, see: https://openexplorer.nationalgeographic.com/expedition/thesocialoctopus), lab experiments, and state-of-the-art computational analysis using deep learning (neural networks). By expanding our understanding of the functional differences between vertebrate and invertebrate (cephalopod) neural architecture and outputted behavioral actions, we may help in pinpointing the responsible mechanistic factors, while also isolating factors, universal across the phylogenetic tree, necessary for the rise of complex cognition.
