Vanessa Madeira, PhD StudentVanessa Madeira Lopes finished her degree in Marine Environmental Biology in 2010 and her Master’s degree in Marine Ecology in 2012 both from the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon’s University. She has long expressed interest in physiology, trying to understand how and why bodies function as they do, especially in marine invertebrates. Later she discovered the unparalleled world of the cephalopods, and ever since her research has been focused on cephalopod physiology and behaviour. She is currently on the second year of her Ph.D., studying cephalopods as vectors of harmful algal bloom toxins, the mechanisms and consequences of this interaction. Her academic progress has taken her to Guia’s Marine Laboratory, where she found the perfect home for her scientific progress under Rui Rosa’s supervision.
